Tryouts for fall 2024 high school sports teams began on Monday, August 19 and it won’t be long before varsity and junior varsity preseason scrimmages, meets and regular season games are underway. In this week’s edition, we have shared the fall 2024 sports schedules for Medomak Valley High School, Lincoln Academy and Wiscasset Middle High School. While in their senior year at the Maine School of Science and Mathematics, a STEM-focused public residential high school in Limestone, Maine, HG applied for a Rotary year to study abroad and was accepted at a French-speaking school in Belgium. Tug Crew Tows Fire-stricken and Abandoned Trawler to Portland, Maine
A tugboat crew was recently called upon to tow in a fire-stricken trawler that had been abandoned in the Gulf of Maine. The 81-foot fishing vessel Three Girls had been adrift since August 11 when an onboard fire forced its crew to evacuate about 105 nautical miles east of Portsmouth, N.H. The U.S. Coast Guard rescued the six people that had been on board—including a captain, a NOAA observer and four crew members—but the trawler itself was left ablaze and adrift out at sea.

Burglary and Theft from Freshies Gas Station
PRESQUE ISLE, Maine (WAGM) - On August 22nd, 2024 at approximately 3:15am the Presque Isle Police Department responded to a motion activated burglary alarm at the Freshies store on Main Street in Presque Isle. After speaking with the store manager police determined that lottery tickets and cigarettes had been taken from the store. Later that morning, two of the stolen lottery tickets were cashed in at another local store in town. Video footage showed a female suspect who was able to be identified as Nicole Gohar, 49, of Presque Isle. Further footage showed Ms. Gohar entering the front of the Freshies store after hours and leaving through the rear employee entrance. Ms. Gohar was arrested on the evening of August 22nd and was charged with Burglary, Theft, Violations of Conditions of Release, and Criminal Mischief. She has been transported to the Aroostook County Jail for arraignment.

FORT FAIRFIELD, Maine — A day care center that closed in July could reopen soon after Fort Fairfield councilors approved a new lease for the facility. Paradis Shop ‘n Save hosts watermelon eating contest amid grand reopening
BREWER, Maine (WABI) - As Paradis Shop ‘n Save in Brewer held its grand reopening, there was also a day full of events. That included a watermelon eating contest complete with four different age groups and prizes. Some kids cleared as many as 16 slices in just three minutes.
