Ballston Target has become a frequent target of shoplifters
Thieves have been increasingly targeting the Ballston area Target store, making it a frequent destination for police dispatches lately. Arlington crime reports for July so far contain some 20 theft offenses for the 700 block of N. Glebe Road, where the store is located. The police department identifies crimes by block number and generally does not identify which specific businesses were the victim of crimes.

Lil’ Sumthin’ Sweet Grand Opening in Downtown Silver Spring on July 27
Lil’ Sumthin’ Sweet, a new ice cream and dessert shop coming to downtown Silver Spring, announced on Instagram Thursday evening that it will open on Saturday, July 27. We reported last month that the sweets shop would open in the previous Smoothie King space at 8563 Fenton St., which was initially mistaken for a new TCBY location due to the brief appearance of their signage.
Construction Materials Cause Fire at Greenbelt Elementary
At approximately 10:53 p.m. on Monday, July 15 a fire was reported at Greenbelt Elementary School. Neighbors reported hearing an explosion prior to the fire. Engines from multiple fire departments responded, including Berwyn Heights and College Park. The section of Ridge Road surrounding the school was closed. The fire was put out approximately 50 minutes later at 11:40 p.m.
Animal Shelter Is Down to One Officer Following Resignations
Over the last couple of weeks two of Greenbelt’s three animal control officers have resigned, including Supervisor Walter Rivas-Flores, who had worked at the shelter since 2022 and became the supervisor in January this year. Earlier this year Rivas-Flores, who personally trained every volunteer, spoke enthusiastically about his big plans for the future of the shelter and described his work as “a labor of love.”
