After what is being reported as an exchange of gunfire, a Damascus man was shot and mildly wounded by law enforcement officers Wednesday, June 26, in Tillamook.

Joey De La Rosa Rodriguez, 37, of Damascus received non-life-threatening injuries during the exchange of gunfire. He was treated at a local medical facility before being taken at the Tillamook County Jail.

The officers involved were from the Tillamook Police Department, Tillamook County Sheriff’s Deputies and the Oregon State Police. The Oregon State Police Major Crimes Section is leading an investigation of officer involved.

No law enforcement members were reported injured.

Officers attempted to stop a white Toyota Tacoma around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in the parking lot of Fred Meyer near Highway 101 and Makinster Road. According to the agencies involved, officers had probable cause to arrest the suspect for previously eluding law enforcement over the last few days.

During the traffic stop, the suspect allegedly fired a pistol, striking multiple law enforcement vehicles. An exchange of gunfire ensued between the suspect and officers from the Tillamook Police Department and deputies from Tillamook County Sheriff’s Office. The suspect fled the scene and was pursued by all three agencies. The pursuit traveled southbound on Highway 101 for approximately five miles before the suspect’s vehicle was partially disabled by spike strips.
