Readers Respond to More Trees Killed by Civic Neglect in East Portland
You know the cliché about a tree falling silently in a forest. But what sound does a sapling make if the city forgets to water it? This is a recurring question in East Portland, where, for the second consecutive summer, trees planted to increase the canopy in the city’s hottest neighborhoods ended up dead or dying (“Unbeleafable,” WW, Aug. 14). In one case, the blame falls on a city contractor that didn’t water freshly planted trees for three weeks—which happened to be the three hottest weeks of the year. Here’s what our readers had to say:

In women’s college volleyball, realignment shifts some top powers, rivalries as popularity surges
Perhaps no sport will be impacted more by the most recent round of conference realignment than women’s volleyball. Five of the last nine schools to win national championships switched conferences during the offseason. Those five schools (Texas, Stanford, UCLA, Washington and Southern California) have combined to claim 12 of the last 23 titles.
OHSU Eliminates Rolfing, Massage and Other Pain-Relief Methods as Part of “Strategic Alignment”
Another casualty of the budget cuts at Oregon Health & Science University? “Non-allopathic integrative medicine services.”. In less technical terms, that means that OHSU will no longer offer chiropractic care, massage, acupuncture or Rolfing starting next year, according to an email announcing the cuts obtained by WW.
