A “ghostly-looking” dolphin was spotted by a charter boat off the coast of Orange County’s Dana Point on Tuesday.

The unusual-looking marine mammal was seen by crewmembers aboard Capt. Dave’s Dolphin & Whale Watching Safari as it swam in a pod with other common dolphins, the Orange County Register reported.

Experts believe the dolphin’s ghostly appearance is due to leucism, a rare loss of skin pigmentation.

“Seeing this rare and unusual dolphin is very special and helps us identify them in the future as well,” Gisele Anderson, co-president of Capt. Dave’s Dolphin & Whale Watching Safari told the Register.

The rare dolphin sighting comes after killer whales made several unexpected appearances off the Southern California coast in December 2023 and January of this year.
