Dansville Central School Superintendent Kelly M. Zimmerman is being recognized for her rural schools advocacy.

The Rural Schools Association of New York presented Zimmerman, a Hornell native, with the William H. Deming Award at the group's annual conference earlier this month.

The award is given each year by the Rural Schools Association of NYS to a superintendent in recognition of their service and commitment to education.

The association cited Zimmerman's dedication as a longtime advocate for rural schools and her active role as an RSA board member.

A 1991 Hornell High School graduate, Zimmerman has more than a quarter century of experience in public education, with an extensive background in rural and small school district leadership.

"To say that I'm humbled by this recognition is an understatement. This belongs to my colleagues who work tirelessly to prioritize equitable education for rural students," Zimmerman said.

Zimmerman has been Dansville superintendent since July 1, joining the Livingston County school district after serving as superintendent of Delaware Academy Central School.

The Rural Schools Association supports New York state's small and rural districts, which the RSA said "often face challenges of political marginalization and under funding."

The RCA said it works to ensure these districts "have the necessary resources to enhance educational efficiency and effectiveness."
