DANVILLE, Ill. (WCIA) — Officials are now using sonar in the search for the missing 12-year-old boy in the Vermilion River, but current conditions and underwater obstacles are proving to be a challenge for search and rescue operations.

The boy went missing Monday night while swimming in the river . He went under the water’s surface at 8 p.m. and hasn’t been seen since.

Officials said the search for the boy is being complicated by heavy rain that happened last week and earlier this week. The result is a strong current and hazardous conditions in the river. In addition, the river is full of trees, jagged rocks, debris jams, drop-offs and holes under the surface of the water.

In light of these hazards, authorities are asking the public to stay out of the river and away from the search area.

“The community has been very helpful in offering support during the search and cooperating with emergency and law enforcement personnel by staying clear of the riverbanks to avoid interference or by also putting themselves at risk,” the Danville Police Department said in a press release. “This is a difficult time for our community and especially those directly affected such as family and friends of the missing juvenile as well as the witnesses. We ask for continued support for everyone impacted.”

The department added that they will continue to provide updated information as it becomes available.
