DANVILLE, Ill. (WCIA) — Danville High School jumped at the chance to compete in girls’ flag football from the moment the sport was added to the fall calendar.

“It was like a little birdie in our ear like hey, be prepared, because we’re going to have a lot of ladies who want to come out,” said co-head coach Taylor Vollmer.

The Vikings expect to field a team of at least 60 players at the start of the inaugural season, split into varsity and junior varsity rosters, aiming to provide players with opportunities to earn a scholarship in an upcoming sport across the country.

“We’re able to get them from all types of incomes to come here and to engage in a sport that they didn’t have to filter their way in from two years old up,” said co-head coach Bryan Simmons.

The new team also gets to play on a brand-new turf field, complete with a video scoreboard, which will be completed in time for their first-ever home game on August 29th against Peoria Richwoods.

“A lot of people are looking forward to the new field,” said freshman Serenity Martin. “Everybody’s excited to see what it’s gonna look like, how it’s gonna feel. I’m really excited to go out there and play first.”

Danville will be one of over 100 teams competing in IHSA Girls Flag Football in its inaugural season.
