July is the heart of the summer months, so why not spend it in the heart of Danville at the Art Center of the Bluegrass? Register the kiddos for a creative summer camp, enjoy getting crafty in the Art Studio, cool off with a stroll around the GLASS National Art Museum, or meet friends for lunch at Murrini Café. Catch an exhibit of local artists

In our Main Street Gallery, you’ll find work by local artists during July with an exhibit by the Gathering Artists. This alliance of local artists includes painters, sculptors, and more. Visit the exhibit at 409 West Main Street from 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and Sundays from 1-5 p.m.

Grab a bite at Murrini Café

Named for the colorful patterns found when a cane of glass is cut into a cross-section, Murrini Café is a perfect place to meet at the intersection of art and cuisine. The inspired menu features weekly specials, including Cake of the Week. The artsy ambiance is a great spot to unwind for a pour of bourbon, a glass of wine, and a handcrafted charcuterie board. Open Wednesday – Saturday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sundays from 1-5 p.m.

From July 8-12 we offer a full-day camp for rising 1st – 5th graders with the whimsical ‘It’s a Small World – Miniature Art Camp.’ In this enchanting camp, young artists explore the intricate beauty of miniature art. From tiny landscapes to pint-sized sculptures, participants will create their little worlds with big imaginations.

For kids going into 6th – 12th grades, we have a half-day Sewing Camp July 15-19. This hands-on camp is a stitching adventure where budding designers learn the art of sewing. From threading needles to learning how to use the sewing machine, participants will explore the world of fabrics and patterns as they craft stylish and functional creations including a pillowcase and trendy tote bag.

From July 22-26 we will offer a full-day Sketchbook and Drawing Camp for rising 1st – 5th graders. With personalized sketchbooks in hand, campers will learn essential techniques, experiment with various mediums, and bring their imaginations to life on paper. Join us for a sketch-tastic journey where every mark of the pencil tells a story and artistic expression knows no bounds.

Pottery Adventure Camp is a half-day camp for those rising into 6th – 12th grades from July 22-26. Learn to master pottery skills through wheel-throwing and hand-building techniques. Create bowls, mugs, and functional pottery in this hands-on experience. This camp brings the joy of pottery to life and teaches skills like trimming and glazing too.

Explore the wonders of nature and join us on a botanical journey from July 29 – Aug. 2 for In the Garden Camp. Rising 1st – 5th graders will dig into the beauty of gardens through hands-on activities, educational adventures, and creative exploration. From planting seeds to discovering the fascinating world of insects, this full-day camp is a green paradise for young nature enthusiasts.

Laura Elwyn is Named Acting Director

Associate Director at the Art Center Laura Elwyn has been named Acting Director by the board of directors. Elwyn has been at the Art Center since January 2023 and has been instrumental in the many changes of the past year, including the acquisition of 409 West Main Street, and the openings of GLASS National Art Museum and Murrini Café. She is stepping into the position after Executive Director Niki Kinkade announced her departure earlier this month. Kinkade has accepted a leadership role at The Bascom – A Center for the Visual Arts in Highlands, North Carolina.
