A wave of storms Wednesday night continued to pass through Vermont, tailing off into the evening. A flash flood warning remained active until 10:30 p.m. for towns including Cabot, Danville, St. Johnsbury, Lyndon and Burke, according to the National Weather Service.

Less than 48 hours after flooding tore through parts of the Northeast Kingdom , state and municipal officials feared a subsequent series of storm cells Wednesday could cause another round of damage in already hard-hit communities.

As of 8 p.m., Vermont Emergency Management had not heard reports of new damage, according to spokesperson Mark Bosma.

By that time, Wednesday’s storms had already dropped between 1 and 2.5 inches of rain in parts of the Northeast Kingdom, with higher end totals noted in Cabot and Danville, according to Eric Myskowski, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service Burlington.

“There’s also a second round of rain moving into that area,” he said. “Thankfully, that round of rain is lighter than the first round of rain, but the combination of these two areas of rain plus the saturated soils — and the flooding and heavy rain from the previous days — gives you the potential for some localized flash flooding.”

Myskowski said the steadiest rain was expected to exit the state around midnight, with lingering showers possible.

Monday night into Tuesday morning, torrential downpours hovered over parts of Caledonia, Essex and Orleans counties, unleashing more than 8 inches of rain. Towns like St. Johnsbury , Island Pond and Lyndon bore the brunt of the damage.
