Authorities said a man walked into a Daphne Planet Fitness Monday, checked in at the front desk, and went straight to the locker room.
“He started checking lockers,” said Lt. Jason Lazzari with Daphne Police. “Found one that didn’t have a lock on it, found this book bag in there and he put it inside a book bag that he had with him.”
Inside the backpack were a wallet and credit and debit cards.
“As we were out there taking the report, the victim started getting notifications that he was getting fraudulent charges from several businesses in the area,” said Lazzari.
The suspect, Daniel Mallahan, was captured on security cameras at one of the businesses, as was the van he was driving, but that’s not all investigators learned about Mallahan.
“He is a registered sex offender in Indiana and New York and the van that he was in was reported stolen out of Indiana,” said Lazzari.
Wednesday, Baldwin County Sheriff’s deputies spotted the van at a campground in Lillian.
Two people traveling with Mallahan — Taryn Everitt and Jeremy Packer — were seen getting out of the van and were arrested for receiving stolen property.
Mallahan was attempting to leave the area when he was arrested.
“A lot of times in these types of cases we’re not able to find them this fast,” said Lazzari. “It helped that with other agencies and technology, we were able to find him fairly quickly.”

Investigators believe the trio had been in the area for about a week.
Along with all the other charges, Mallahan is also facing drug charges for possession of crack and fentanyl, and more charges are expected involving his sex offender status.
