When we first moved to Cumming, Georgia, there were two must-find things on our list: a good Chinese restaurant (look for this soon!) and an excellent Mexican restaurant.

As a lifetime Atlantan, my experience with Mexican food goes back to the '70s with the iconic Mexican wrestler, El Toro, opened up his chain. All Mexican restaurants since then have had to live up to that legacy. Las Palmas in Cumming, Georgia, more than fills the bill.

There are many great Mexican restaurants within a few miles of our home, but Las Palmas hit it out of the park the first time we tried it. We were greeted at the door by two hosts, and the service was outstanding. The only thing better was the food. In many visits since then, we have learned that is just how they do business.

It is located in Southard Crossing Shopping Center, next to the Publix, at the corner of Bethelview and Castleberry Roads just a few miles south of Cumming.

Las Palmas has been our go-to for take-out or dine-in since we discovered it about four years ago. It has been especially welcome over the last year, thanks to its spacious and protected outdoor patio. The inside is also beautiful with well-spaced tables and roomy booths. And the service is always prompt, courteous, and friendly.

But, of course, it is the food that keeps us coming back.

TL;DR If you are looking for a Speedy Gonzales or any other standard Lunch Special, Las Palmas has that. But, please do yourself a favor and peruse the entire eight-page menu before making up your mind. We have been many times by ourselves or with another couple, and I have yet to see anyone order the great but standard lunch specials.

The first page is devoted to Las Palmas' famous margaritas and daiquiris, along with beer, wine, and cocktails. I can't speak to these as I don't drink, but they look fantastic passing by.

Next up are appetizers. I have to tell you unless you have a large party, appetizers and desserts are a waste of time. Not because they aren't good. But because you get so much food, you can't possibly eat anything else. Having said that, their Cheese Dip is delicious, but the Chorizo Cheese Dip is out of this world.

And, who needs appetizers, when they keep coming out with the bottomless baskets of warm tortilla chips made in-house along with a bowl of their homemade salsa. The salsa is just spicy enough to be tasty, but not so hot that my wife can't enjoy it.

The next page is where my wife camps out, offering Nachos, Salads, and Street Tacos. Like everything else, the portions are massive, so don't think a salad will be a light lunch. The Street Tacos are ala cart, so you can mix and match the seven varieties. I wouldn't recommend ordering more than three, and two are plenty for lunch.

Of course, Las Palmas in Cumming, Georgia, has the usual array of tacos, burritos, quesadillas, and fajitas. Their Carne Asada and Chili Poblano are two of my favorites. Our friends almost always order one of the many varieties of Chimichangas, especially seafood, which can be fish or shrimp.

As I said, they have the regular lunch specials you can find in many Mexican restaurants, but I usually can't get past the dinner combinations. Today, I had the two tacos, enchilada and chili con queso. Most combos also come with beans and rice, although fortunately for me, this one doesn't.

If you find yourself in South Forsyth County in Cumming, Georgia, and have a taste for Mexican, you can't go wrong with Las Palmas.

Yeah, I'd go crazy in there with tacos, nachos, quesadillas, and a margarita.
