To get to Marie's Italian Deli in Cumming, Georgia, you have to know where you are going. Tucked in behind a car wash and a Tire Shop, Marie's is at the end of a small strip center beside a bicycle shop and a tax preparation service. But those in the know have no problem finding it because it is one of the most popular restaurants in the county.

But despite plenty of inside and outside seating, included expanded versions of both, calling Marie's Italian Deli in Cumming, Georgia a restaurant is doing it a disservice. Before you reach the counter in front of the massive menu and place your order, you have passed the bakery counter and the deli counter. Both of these offer a vast display of deli foods and baked goods to get your mouth watering.

If you haven't been there before, I would suggest grabbing one of the take-out menus and having a seat - if you can find one. The menu is so vast, trying to read it all in the brief moments before it becomes your turn to order would create unrest in those behind you. Marie's has many regular, loyal customers that form the line that often extends out the door, and you don't want to be the one to hold them up.

If you don't want to read the whole menu, you can't go wrong with one of their daily specials. This is usually a half-sub with a cup of soup or a slice of pizza and a salad. Insider Tip: You can substitute any half-sub for the one on the daily special. Having said that, the special is usually my wife's favorite, The Godmother; smoked ham, slabs of fresh mozzarella, tomatoes, basil, and a delicious balsamic vinaigrette. I'm not usually a fan of vinaigrette, but I always have her order extra, so we have some to take home. Another tip: Eat the soup first. You aren't going to be able to finish the whole meal, and the sub travels well.

I try to get in line behind everyone because it always takes me a while to decide. I can always opt for Micheli's Italian Sub. It's pretty standard fare, but the meat is piled high, and I love the banana peppers. If I want a hearty meal, I go for the Italian Beef. Few people outside Chicago know about this delicious roast beef sandwich. I worked with some native Chicagoans a few years back that turned me onto it, although it is almost impossible to find the Atlanta area. It's sort of a cross between a Philly Cheesesteak (But don't tell anyone from Philly that) and a French Dip. But, the Italian Beef is smothered with a mild giardiniera, a pickled vegetable salad.

If I want to eat light, I order a salad. Unfortunately, the salad I always order is the "Man Salad." A considerable portion of salad greens and veggies topped with about a half-pound of deli meats and cheeses. On other occasions, I have opted for Little Marie's Farmer's Salad, an exciting blend of salad greens, veggies, egg, and cheese. And you could never go wrong with the hot pastrami, chicken parm, or an of a dozen other tasty soups, salads, and sandwiches. And we didn't even get to the pizza. I keep promising to try it, but there are too many other delicious offerings on the menu.

Honestly, we have never saved enough room for any of the bakery treats on display, but we always try to leave a little room for the gelato on display in the back. My final tip of the day: Order a small. Like everything else at Marie's Italian Deli in Cumming, Georgia, a small is large.

If you are in the Cumming, Georgia area and are craving anything Italian, make your way to Marie's. It's just a little north of Ga 20 on the right side of Hwy 9. Oh, and by the way, they serve breakfast too.
