A $750,000 grant will be used to complete a new teen space at the Denver central library.

The Business, Arts, Workforce and Aviation Services Committee of the Denver City Council will vote to accept the grant at its meeting Wednesday. The grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development will pay for a large community event space, redesigned entries and central hall, improved café space, and other health and safety upgrades, according to a memo from city staff to the City Council. The project includes furniture, technology and program services for youth in the new Teen Library, including desks, seating, computers, audio visual equipment, gaming equipment and targeted outreach and services.

According to a memo from city staff to the City Council, the Teen Library is “a vital component of the major renovation of the DPL Central Library. Started through the Elevate Denver bond program, the $58 million renovation … reflects active work with Denver’s Office of Children’s Affairs, aligns with Denver’s Youth Violence Prevention Comprehensive Plan, and aims at creating safe and welcoming spaces for teens in Denver’s downtown corridor.”

The Denver Library has a web page showcasing its teen services. In addition to featuring an updated reading list, homework help and other virtual services are available. There also are links to Planned Parenthood, Urban Peak, a homeless shelter for teens, Colorado crisis services such as free therapy and resources for LGBT youth.

College-bound teens can find all they need to prepare for their next chapter on the website. Scholarships, internships and apprenticeships also are featured.
