Opinion: Migrants have long sought out Aurora, Colorado’s most diverse city

Angry commenters of online articles about Aurora’s reported Venezuelan gang problems blame Denver’s status as a “sanctuary city” for migrants spilling into Aurora. But Aurora long has been the real deal when it comes to welcoming migrants and is the most diverse city in the state.

“Aurora takes pride in its diversity and is among the most diverse cities in Colorado,” according to the city’s website. “This can be seen in everything from the global choices in local restaurants and our international connections through the arts, culture and events that celebrate the city's diversity. “

More than 30% or Aurora’s population identifies as Hispanic or Latino, according to the website, making it the highest concentration in the state. The Aurora Hispanic population outpaces Denver at 23.9% and Colorado at 22%. For those coming from Spanish speaking countries, it makes sense that they could have relatives in Aurora.

More than one in five Aurorans are foreign born, according to the city’s website. More than 42,000 come from the Americas, followed by Asia (19,049), Africa (14,200) and Europe (5,792).

Aurora is home to many Hispanic-owned businesses, which could provide employment to Spanish-speaking migrants.

    Established Hispanic community in Aurora

Although Denver’s status as a sanctuary city may have attracted migrants in the beginning, some no doubt settled in Aurora once they got here because of its diversity. There is an established Hispanic migrant community in Aurora. It is reasonable that Venezuelan immigrants would want to be where they feel welcome. Two members of Aurora’s City Council are Hispanic, Ruben Medina and Crystal Murillo.

But many Aurorans have erupted in cries of deportation for the migrants. The national news media has painted a picture of a town under siege by Venezuelan gangs. Aurora’s status as the most diverse city in the state has been forgotten, as a growing chorus blames Denver for rolling out the welcome mat for the migrants. Indeed, Denver hung a massive banner on city hall proclaiming its adoration for the immigrants.

    Aurora council: Migrants stay out

Aurora’s City Council has taken a much different approach, making it clear they do not have the resources to assist migrants and do not want them here. But the opinions of lawmakers do not trickle down to the migrant on the street. All they know is an old friend lives in Aurora that they might be able to stay with, or work for. Perhaps family members arrived long ago.

And the truth is, Denver no longer is welcoming the migrants with open arms either. The city hired an employee to go down to El Paso and tell migrants that Denver cannot help beyond travel to another town.

It is not fair or even accurate to say migrants spilled into Aurora from Denver because of proximity. Migrants have long flocked to Aurora so it should not be surprising they continue to do so.
