Donald Trump loses trial, right to carry firearm in NYC

    2024-06-06

The consequences keep piling up for former President Trump after his conviction of 34 felonies in the Federal hush money case involving former adult actress Stormy Daniels. Trump was convicted of falsifying business records relating to the payments made to Daniels.

The direct legal consequences remain to be seen at the former President's sentencing hearing July 11, but the indirect consequences have already started piling up. In a poll released May 31, 27% of voters say they are less likely to vote for Trump after the convictions. It's worth mentioning that an almost equivalent amount (26%) say that they are now MORE likely to vote for Trump, and the largest segment (39%) say they don't care. The latest legal consequence is the revoking of Trump's right to carry a firearm in NYC. This right was already suspended when he was arraigned, and is now in the process of being permanently revoked according to NYC officials. This revocation applies to more than just NYC however - possession of a firearm by a felon is a federal crime, so Trump is no longer able to possess a firearm anywhere in the US unless his rights are restored.

This punishment is largely symbolic - barring the shame of having to sit out the annual quail hunt, it's not likely that Trump has much need to carry a firearm at this point in his life. Let's not forget, as a former president he is entitled to a lifetime Secret Service detail that is likely much more qualified to handle the steel.
