Individual Stats Leader for Chargers Softball
We take a look at individual leaders in the main statistics for AC/GC Chargers softball. Reagan Carney led the team in hits with 29 and RBI’s with 25. Mersadez Richter reached on error the most at four times, and Carney also led in total bases with 43. Richter led in runs with 25, while Jacie Baker led in stolen bases and stolen base attempts, reaching on three of four attempts.

AMES, Iowa — Sondra Wilson claims that the state denied her Medicaid coverage for her gender reassignment surgery. Wilson doesn’t have a law degree, but is representing herself in this case. She said she reached out to about 50 different law firms across the state and couldn’t afford any of the quotes she was given.
RAGBRAI to Make Way Through Greenfield Tomorrow
The biggest bicycling event for the state of Iowa is underway. Tomorrow, the bicyclists taking part in the Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI) will make their way through Adair County, with Greenfield being the midday stop. The route through Greenfield has changed since the city was originally chosen as a stop, allowing bicyclists to tour through areas that were in the path of the May 21st tornado that devastated a mile long stretch of the town in a minute.

Rare unplowed land near Ames may be how Iowa prairie looked 150 years ago
(Radio Iowa) – Researchers recently discovered what’s known as a “remnant prairie” at the Iowa State University Horticulture Research Station and they’re working to restore it. Remnant prairies have never been plowed or completely converted into non-native species. Only about zero-point-one percent of this original habitat remains in Iowa, though it once covered nearly 80-percent of the state. Nick Howell is superintendent for the horticulture research station. “This was found as a fluke,” Howell says. “When I started here in 2006, you couldn’t even get to it. It was just completely full of scrub brush.”

The Des Moines Register is there as Gov. Robert Ray returns from an October 1979 visit to Southeast Asia, where he toured refugee camps in Thailand. "I watched people die," Ray tells the Register for the Oct. 30 edition, saying the conditions were so horrific he doesn't know how to describe them. The Republican governor, who had so far resettled 4,000 refugees from the Vietnam War to Iowa, acknowledges backlash for his efforts, "but this is a matter of life and death." Ray, joined by Iowa leaders including Register President and Editor Michael Gartner, forms the Iowa SHARES charity, which raises hundreds of thousands of dollars to buy food and other aid to assist the refugees in Thailand.
