DAYTON, Ohio ( WDTN ) — A second individual has been pronounced dead after a mass shooting in Dayton on Monday, June 24 .

According to Dayton Police , an 18-year-old has died after being transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries after a drive-by shooting on Home Avenue last week. On July 2, the teen died from his injuries at Miami Valley Hospital.

The Montgomery County Coroner’s Office identified him as Jhakavion Casey. He is the second victim to die in the shooting — Donna Zile, 22, was pronounced dead at the scene on Monday.

As further details are released, the community is mourning. Vera Bozeman is a nearby neighbor who witnessed the aftermath of the shooting; she says the news of the teen’s death is devastating.

“He was only 18 years old and his life really hadn’t even started,” said Vera Bozeman, neighbor. “I feel for them, because I lost my son, and it’s so hard, you know?”

Dayton police say that seven people total were shot in the incident, including two 17-year-old girls, two 18-year-old boys and a 20-year-old woman.

This shooting was one of three in a 72-hour span in Dayton — each of the situations involving young people with guns on the city’s west side. Police say around 15 people were shot in that time span.

“These kids need to put these guns down because life, life stops,” said Bozeman. “Once you do it, you did it.”

Bozeman says she is praying for the violence to stop and for the victims’ families to recover.

The condition of the five others injured in the Home Avenue shooting is currently unknown.
