DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — Montgomery County Prosecuting Attorney spoke Monday afternoon to the public.

During a press conference, Mat Heck, Jr., announced that Stephanie Shanks, 58, of Dayton, was arrested on a warrant on multiple charges related to the death of her grandson, Charles Brown.

5-year-old overdoses on fentanyl, xylazine: death ruled ‘accidental’

On March 30, Shanks reportedly called 911 to report Brown was “cold and unresponsive,” according to Heck. Paramedics then responded and pronounced him dead.

Heck said Shanks acted as the babysitter for Brown, a twin and another child during the weekends, while the mother works.

Allegedly, straws with drug residue were found inside of the grandmother’s residence. Drug powder was also reportedly located in the home.

“When you look at how incredibly dangerous these drugs can be to adults, what they can be for a 5-year-old child,” said Heck. “It’s just absolutely ridiculous.”

Shanks is currently being held in the Montgomery County Jail on the following charges:

    • 1 count of involuntary manslaughter
    • 3 counts of child endangering
    • 1 count of drug possession
