DAYTON, Ohio ( WDTN ) — One person has died in an early-morning shooting in Dayton Tuesday.

Police responded around 3:15 a.m. to South Conover and West Fifth Streets on a shots-fired call.

Officers found John Favors, 37, on the sidewalk with a gunshot wound to the head. They administered first aid, but he died on the scene.

Another man, 33, arrived later at a hospital with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. Separately, two women in a sedan flagged down an officer responding to an unrelated call to point out the multiple bullet holes in their vehicle.

The scene of this morning’s shooting is just a few blocks from where a drive-by shooting in June left seven attendees at a pop-up party wounded, two fatally.

People living nearby say the property was formerly a Masonic Temple but was currently being used as a bootleg bar selling illegal alcohol after hours.

This shooting brings the total number of violent crimes involving a firearm in Dayton up to 293 so far this year. That’s around 50 more crimes than last year at this time, and over 70 more since 2022.

People in the area say they love the neighborhood but they want to see speed bumps put on the roads and they want to see these shootings end for good.

“I hope that the gun violence stops. It’s been a lot of crimes. And, you know, we all need to love each other more. That’s all I can say,” said Cynthia Evans, a local resident.

Dayton Police’s Homicide Units continues to investigate. They ask that anyone with information call (937) 333-1232 to speak with detectives. Those who want to remain anonymous can contact Crime Stoppers at (937) 222-STOP (7867) or via miamivalleycrimestoppers.com .
