Neighbors describe shooting that killed man, injured another in Dayton

One man is dead and another man was injured after a shooting in Dayton Tuesday morning.

Around 3:14 a.m. man was found shot on a sidewalk on Conover Street and West Fifth Street where he was pronounced dead. He was identified as 37-year-old John Favors.

Later, a 33-year-old man arrived at an area hospital with a gunshot wound.

His injuries were determined to be non-life threatening, according to Dayton Police.

As reported on News Center 7 at 5:00, this is the fourth shooting in Dayton in just three days.

Neighbors and police told News Center 7′s John Bedell this is not the first time they’ve seen problems here.

Just down the block from the scene, Shante Chatman said she could hear the gunfire.

“It sounded like it was ‘The Wild Wild West’ outside,” Chatman said.

Chatman‘s aunt made one of the 911 calls that brought Dayton police to the scene. She described hearing a “shootout.”

Dayton police said they were flagged down by two women in a car with several bullet holes in it.

A Dayton police sergeant said the shooting happened at an after-hours bar and police have had other incidents there before.

“It’s a little after-hours joint. And there’s always gun violence. It never stops. Every other night it’s something,” Chatman said.

News Center 7 covered a shooting at this location in May. Two men were shot and wounded in that gunfire.

After the city’s latest homicide, Chatman said she wishes the gun violence would stop.

“It’s unsafe. Like what if it’s innocent people sleeping in bed, sitting in the living room and y’all just opened fire? That’s unfair to society,” Chatman said.
