DAYTON, Ohio ( WDTN ) — A local organization was at the Dayton city commission meeting Wednesday night, seeking answers after an officer shot and killed a 16-year-old back in June .

Ohio Families Unite Against Police Brutality brought a petition with over 4,000 signatures to Dayton City Council. The group demands several actions including the turning over of this investigation to the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation.

On June 29, Dayton Police Officers encountered a group of people while on patrol. One of the individuals in that group, Brian T. Moody, took off from officers.

The officers gave chase, and when the individual turned around and pointed something that looked like a weapon, the officers fired.

As further details and footage were revealed, police say they recovered a fully automatic modified handgun.

A total of 4,127 signatures were gathered for the petition, and dozens were in attendance, making it a packed city commission meeting.

Ohio Families Unite Against Police Brutality spoke to city leaders, calling for the full body cam footage to be released as well as the names of the officers involved and the victim’s brothers’ interrogation.

They say it wasn’t the outcome they wanted but the fight is not over for them.

“I personally feel like I failed the family, you know, because they didn’t look like they were willing to do a thing about it,” said Sabrina Jordan, OFUAPB founder. “Definitely want to get in touch with the city manager and see what she plans on doing about this with these signatures. She’s the boss of everything. So hopefully we can see what she’s going to do about it.”

Residents who also spoke were demanding justice for Moody, asking for gun control, and safety and security. All hoping to work towards transparency.

“Our community is in a crisis West Dayton in particular is crying out for help. We need immediate financial support and resources to combat the underlying issues of drugs and gun violence that plague our streets,” said one speaker at the meeting.

Following comments, Dayton city leaders addressed the issue of gun violence and said they are actively coming up with new ideas. Especially for the Violence Interruption Program .

“When we have individuals whose hearts are heavy with sadness because of what’s happened in their particular lives, and in no way do we intend to sometimes make light by talking about some of the positive things that we’re doing. Or those challenges that we are experiencing,” said Dayton Mayor Jeffrey Mims, Jr. “Everybody who is involved in this city is something that is very critical to us and we’re working on that as well.”

The investigation is still being conducted by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office. Dayton commissioners also say once that is complete and they have all the facts, they will go from there.
