    New development to offer affordable housing for residents in Montgomery County

    Prices to rent or buy a house are skyrocketing, but a group of people plan to bring affordable housing to the Dayton area.

    As reported on News Center 7 at 5:30 , the average Ohio worker who rents is not making enough to comfortably afford housing.

    The average sales price for a home in the Dayton area is up nearly $30,000 this year, according to Dayton Realtors.

    Non-profit organization County Corp . and the Dayton-Montgomery County Port Authority are working with Dublin Capital Group to develop affordable apartments on the west side of Dayton.

    The building will be located on Cambridge Avenue and has 45 units. Developers plan to add another 47 units next door.

    Dayton resident Tequila Jones said housing costs are too high.

    “I feel like anything that’s called affordable housing is needed in Dayton, Ohio,” Jones said.

    County Corp. Housing President Steve Naas said the increase in housing prices is due to supply and demand.

    “It used to be units, maybe those were available at affordable rates and those have inched up as the demand has really just gone through the roof,” Naas said.

    He said this development also has a restriction on the rent price.

    “Those rental rates then are dictated essentially by the area median income of our County,” Naas said.

    According to Naas, too many renters are paying more than 30% of their monthly income for housing.

    “If I’m making $3,000 a month on income and I have to pay more than $1,000 for rent, that’s not really leaving that much more for four weeks’ worth of whatever I’ve got it,” Naas said.

    Residents like Jones said they want to see a continued effort to bring affordable housing to the area, even after this development is complete.

    “It’s a lot of people out here, homes that a lot of people in need.
