DAYTON, Ohio ( WDTN ) — A worldwide tech outage hit the Miami Valley bright and early today.

It started when the cybersecurity giant CrowdStrike launched an update that caused an issue with Microsoft systemS — resulting in outages in airports, governments, businesses and more.

All flights at Dayton International Airport were briefly grounded due to the outage. Multiple local agencies were also affected.

2 NEWS was inside the airport this morning to capture the unprecedented event, as people lined up all over, trying to get answers. By the evening, systems are mostly back to normal, but flight times are still being impacted.

The outage was traced back to the software company, CrowdStrike, who says this was not a cyberattack. The company is currently working on a fix, but residual effects will be felt for some time.

“It was a disaster,” said Shawn Waldman, CEO of Secure Cyber Defense. “You know, a lot of the leading Fortune 500 companies use CrowdStrike everyday.”

The effects were felt globally, and in the Dayton area, the Montgomery County Treasurer’s Office experienced problems with their online payment system.

Today is the deadline for the second half of annual property taxes, and before long, the calls started coming in.

“We are projected to collect over a billion dollars for the first time in Montgomery County’s history in property tax revenue,” said John McManus, Montgomery County treasurer. “And so obviously this is a very important day for this office.”

    What is CrowdStrike?

Residents were able to give the Treasurer’s Office a call earlier today if they were experiencing issues. If they found their card was having issues, then the 10% late fee was waived.

The City of Dayton shared a press release earlier today saying they saw a minimal impact due to the outage. They expect everything to be fixed by today. Anyone experiencing a delay in response can call NUMBER.

The Butler County Sheriff’s Office shares that 911 calls were routed to Hamilton County this morning due to the outage. Some banks and hospitals were temporarily unable to operate.

2 NEWS has not received any reports of issues at local hospitals at this time.

Experts say that it could be weeks before the residual effects have been completely worked out. Despite the massive outage, there is currently no evidence of this being intentional.
