DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — Court was back in session Monday in the case of the 81-year-old man caught on camera killing an Uber driver in April.

The prosecution and defense were in court for a status update as William Brock, 81, prepares to go to trial for the death of Loletha Hall, 61.

Brock has pled not guilty to murder and is currently out on bail.

As of now, a trial date has not been set but is expected to happen sometime next spring.

Defense attorneys for Brock said he was acting in self-defense when he shot someone outside his home. They said he believed the victim was trying to scam him out of more than $10,000.

“This is a case that without dispute involves the threat to kill an 81-year-old farmer,” said defense attorney John Paul Rion.

“She entered his house without permission, without knocking. And when she entered his house, he thought that this this was the time when he was either going to die or he had to turn over the money.”

Rion said that under Ohio law, it is the burden of the prosecution to prove that self-defense was not applicable.

The shooting made national headlines after dashboard camera footage of the exchange was released.

Court records show the deadly incident originated from a scam call to Brock demanding money for an incarcerated relative.

Uber driver Hall showed up at Brock’s home requesting a package. Brock then took possession of Hall’s phone, demanding to know the identity of the scammers.

Authorities have made no connection between Hall and the alleged scammers.

According to authorities, Brock called 911 after shooting Hall several times outside of his home.

Body camera footage shows responding officers received a phone call at Bbrock’s home from the alleged scammer after the incident.

Police recovered more than $12,000 from the home when Brock was initially arrested.
