DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — Area educators recently received lessons on implementing the fundamentals of funk into their classrooms.

During a four-day workshop hosted by Muse Machine, local K-12 educators flocked to the Metropolitan Arts Center in downtown Dayton. Musicians and experts explained to participants the history of the Dayton funk scene, as well as how Dayton ancestors changed music’s sound.

“It’s called the funky classroom,” said Lafrae Sci, imaginationist. “Funk fundamentals are life fundamentals; groove, identity, imagination and futurism, which gives us hope.

Teaching Artist Deron Bell said educators have the ability to interact with students more with music.

“As a music educator and licensed practitioner of restorative practices, I believe that any teacher can connect with students on a deeper level through the universal language of music,” said Bell.

Muse Machine has also partnered with the Dayton Metro Library, which will create book lists for people of all ages about Black futurism, funk music and the intersection of art, music and personal agency.
