DAYTON, Ohio ( WDTN ) — Recreational marijuana is now legal in Ohio, and a local shop is making it easier to take advantage of one aspect of that new law.

“We voted, prohibition is over, we need to celebrate that. And we can celebrate that in a legal, safe way.” said Josh “Doc” Bachand, co-owner of The Local Grow Shop.

The Local Grow Shop is a Dayton business that focuses on the growing portion of the new state cannabis laws.

“With Ohio law, it’s illegal for anyone to sell plants. We do not sell plants. We give a lot of plants away just as they have at many of the Ohio Cannabis conferences,” said Bachand.

The store sells cannabis seeds and growing supplies, while also offering offer classes to learn how to take care of a budding plant.

“Our goal of course being education, we offer classes,” said Bachand.

Ohio state law says if you’re 21 or older, you’re allowed to grow up to six marijuana plants in your home. If you live with another person who is also 21, that number goes up to 12.

“We make sure that everything that we’re doing not only follows the letter of the law, but the intention of the law,” explained Bachand.

The co-owner says their business also puts a premium on product safety.

“We’ve had so many people for years that have bought seeds on the internet. Unfortunately with the internet, you don’t know where you’re getting it or where it’s coming from so much of the time. And while there are a ton of reputable seed dealers on the internet, I know that we have our Amsterdam certification and we follow the rules through the American seed trade association.” said Bachand.
