DAYTON — City and county firefighters responded to a fire at Cooley's Mercantile, across the street from the Dayton Coffee Shop, on Saturday evening.

Much of downtown Dayton was filled with smoke and closed to traffic as firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze, and the cause of the fire is now under investigation. While the structure was not a complete loss, it did suffer fire, smoke and water damage.

Dayton Fire Department Chief Justin Jackson said that no one was injured in the blaze and that three cats that lived at the store were rescued and are safe.
