Tuesday brings to a close 40 days of voting in the Florida Primary Election and up until the last day, fewer than 1 in 5 registered voters in Volusia and Flagler counties had cast ballots.

Election Day voting and some straggler mail ballots will raise turnout some, but will it reach or surpass any of the past four primary elections dating to 2016? That remains to be seen, as Volusia's has not been lower than 27% and no higher than 29.8% (in 2018), while Flagler's reached 33.3% in 2022.

Here's a closer look at some of the numbers that impact today's election.

    7

Voters have until 7 p.m. Tuesday to vote in a polling place or to drop off their mail-in ballots at the Supervisor of Elections offices. In Volusia, the supervisor's address is 1750 S. Woodland Blvd., DeLand. In Flagler, it's 1769 E. Moody Blvd., Bunnell.

    16.3 and 19.7

The percentage of voter turnout for Volusia and Flagler counties as of Monday.

    73.9 percent

Fewer voters are voting by mail than in the last presidential election year primary. In Volusia County, 73.9% of the ballots returned through Sunday were by mail. Four years earlier, as COVID-19 raged, 87.4% of those ballots came via mail.

    #1 early voting site

The eight-day early voting period in which Volusia County opened seven polling sites and Flagler four ended Saturday. The Ormond Beach Regional Library proved to attract the most voters with 3,909. Turnout was no doubt driven by a heated School Board District 4 race pitting incumbent Carl Persis and challengers Donna Brosemer and Sarah Marzilli. The next busiest were the Flagler Public Library in Palm Coast (3,380) and the New Smyrna Beach Regional Library (3,039).

    Only 49% Republican

Contrary to popular belief, neither Volusia nor Flagler counties are majority Republican. Flagler has a larger share, with 49% of the county's 93,969 active eligible voters registered Republican. Of Volusia's 372,410 voters, 42.2% are Republican. The Democrats in Volusia (28%) and Flagler (25%) are nearly matched by the no-party-affiliation voters.
