    Volusia-Flagler football roundup: University, Spruce Creek, NSB grab big wins in Week 1

    Week 1 has come and gone.

    Ten Volusia-Flagler teams competed in eight games . There were three more canceled.

    Let's take a look at Thursday and Friday scores from around the area.

    University 31, Mainland 28

    University came back from a 21-10 halftime deficit, with Jermane Hayes catching the game-winning touchdown pass in the final 50 seconds to beat the reigning 3S state champions.

    Hayes added a pick-six while fellow receiver Barrett Schulz caught two touchdown passes from Malachi Walters.

    For Mainland, Sebastian Johnson launched four touchdown passes in his first start. Houston Cadette recorded two scoring catches. Edward Williams and Jameil Patrick nabbed the other two.

    Both squads have home games in Week 2. University (1-0) faces North Miami, and Mainland (0-1) squares off against Cocoa.

    Madison County 42, DeLand 28

    DeLand’s new crop of offensive weapons put up 28 points on Madison County, but the 1R runner-up from 2023 punished the Bulldog defense with its rushing attack. It jumped ahead for good with a 15-0 fourth quarter.

    DeLand will have a quick turnaround for Week 2. It (0-1) visits New Smyrna Beach on Thursday night.

    Bayside 44, Atlantic 22

    Bayside ate up the clock and accumulated yards with its rushing attack against Atlantic (0-1). The Sharks ran just 35 offensive plays.

    Their points came a 5-yard Josh Dudley plunge, a Bryson Harris pick-six and a Terry Sloss Jr. kickoff return.

    Atlantic brings Matanzas in for a Week 2 home game next Friday.

    Bishop Kenny 42, Matanzas 14

    Caden Burchfield tossed a 26-yard touchdown to Thomas Larywon, and Darwin Harris punched in a 7-yard run, but the Pirates (0-1) opened their 2024 campaign with a home loss to Bishop Kenny.

    Aucilla Christian 34, Taylor 6

    Taylor dropped a physical tilt, as Aucilla Christian gashed the Wildcats’ defense on the ground. Quarterback James Thomas accounted for their lone touchdown on a 22-yard scamper, but he exited with a broken hand in the second half.

    Taylor (0-1) hosts St. Francis Catholic in Week 2.

    Jupiter Christian 42, Father Lopez 0

    Father Lopez fell in its home opener to a dominant Jupiter Christian showing, though Green Wave coach Matt Nasser highlighted running back Maverick Grimm and defensive end Teddy Loach as bright spots.

    Next Friday, they (0-1) take on Cedar Creek Christian at home.

    Spruce Creek 50, Seabreeze 0 (Thursday)

    The Hawks scored on their first offensive play and then kept scoring against Seabreeze at Daytona Stadium.

    Two minutes into the first quarter, they held a 22-0 lead. Halfway through the period, the scoreboard read 28-0, and Spruce Creek cruised the rest of the way.

    Denali Campbell tallied three touchdowns, and Trell Edwards had two. Anthony Hayden and Tony Kinsler submitted one apiece.

    Spruce Creek (1-0) heads to Eustis next Friday. Seabreeze (0-1) has a bye.

    New Smyrna Beach 41, Golden 19 (Thursday)

    Hosting Colorado's Golden High School at New Smyrna Beach Sports Complex, the Barracudas (1-0) sped to the game's first 21 points (14 in the first quarter) and maintained control the rest of the way.

    Senior quarterback Alex Johnson contributed four touchdowns. Three came via passes to seniors Brett Remensnyder (two) and Armoni Spurlock (one). The other happened on a 2-yard run, which extended New Smyrna Beach's lead to 28-6 before halftime.

    Junior Ladarius Thomas also rumbled for scores of two and 17 yards.

    Deltona, Pine Ridge and Trinity Christian-Halifax games canceled

    Deltona and Pine Ridge battled inclement weather and had their respective games against Crescent City and Winter Springs canceled.

    In Week 2, both teams will look to kick off their seasons with home victories. Deltona greets Bayside while Pine Ridge has St. Cloud.

    Halifax and Trinity Christian also scrapped their matchup, with the Eagles not having enough players to complete. The Knights collected a forfeit win.

    They drive to Cornerstone Charter next Friday. Trinity Christian is scheduled against Joshua Christian.
