Police in Michigan nab ex-boyfriend suspected of shooting Deltona couple last week

A masked man who shot a couple at their Deltona home last week was captured in Michigan and identified as the ex-boyfriend of one of the victims, the Volusia County Sheriff's Office said Monday.

The accused, Malik J. McKenzie, 29, of Atlanta, was tracked down by detectives using license plate readers and surveillance videos. He was located in Southfield, Michigan, on Saturday where he was arrested, deputies said.

The sheriff's office said McKenzie will be extradited to Volusia County to face two counts of attempted first-degree murder and one count of armed burglary.

On Monday, Aug. 19, deputies responded to a 3 a.m. shooting at a Houston Drive home in Deltona. They found the injured couple outside suffering from non-life-threatening injuries, investigators said.

A masked man was seen outside the home just before the shooting, according to deputies.

Deputies identified a dark Nissan Altima with a Georgia tag registered to McKenzie, the suspected shooter. He was spotted at a gas station and a McDonald’s in Volusia County. Deputies also obtained other evidence linking McKenzie to the shooting.

Sheriff's deputies obtained a warrant for McKenzie’s arrest, and he was found near Detroit.
