A pedestrian in a wheelchair was hit by a drunk driver and airlifted to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach in critical condition, DeLand police said.

The 67-year-old DeLand man was struck by a van at 7:49 p.m. Thursday in the 300 block of South Alabama Avenue.

DeLand police arrested Charles Loflin, 60, with a last known address in DeLand, and charged him with DUI causing serious bodily injury. He was in the Volusia County Branch Jail Sunday on $50,000 bail.

Deland police said they responded to the intersection of South Alabama and Walts avenues where they found a wheelchair stuck to the right side of the van's front bumper. The wheelchair's owner was found unresponsive by paramedics and airlifted to the hospital.

Loflin, who smelled of alcohol, told police he had two beers. He failed sobriety tests and registered a blood alcohol level between .152 and .164, twice the legal limit of .08 when a person is considered impaired under Florida law.

The victim was last listed in critical condition, police said.
