Traverse City Hosting International Fireworks Championship This Weekend

The skies over Turtle Creek Stadium in Traverse City will come alive this weekend when the second International Fireworks Championship presented by GFL Environmental takes center stage. Six world-class pyrotechnic teams will compete in a two-day competition.

A limited number of tickets are still available for the Friday and Saturday shows. The competition increased in size from last year’s inaugural competition. This year’s show will feature teams from Australia, the United Kingdom, India, the Philippines, Finland, and the U.S.

To compete, the teams must have previously won other fireworks competitions. Each team will have up to 15 minutes for their performance and be judged on design, synchronization to music, and the overall show experience. The finale of Friday’s show will be presented by last year’s winning team from Germany. Saturday’s show will conclude with a presentation by a group of pyrotechnic judges.

“There is no other fireworks show like this in the country,” says Trevor Tkach, president of Traverse City Tourism. “There is an electric atmosphere around this show that makes your senses sizzle.”

Best of Show awards will be given on both nights by a public vote of attendees. Pyrotechnic experts will present a juried award based on the teams’ performances on both Friday and Saturday.

For public safety, police will restrict and enforce no-parking zones near the stadium before and during the show. People with noise sensitivities, or concerns with pets are advised to avoid the stadium area around show time. The fireworks will start shortly after sunset.

Tickets sales and more information about the show are available at TraverseCity.com . All ticket sales are final. In case of rain, spectators are encouraged to dress appropriately.

Michigan Legacy Credit Union CEO Spearheads Mitten Women Golf Group

Recognizing the need for more female credit union executives to encourage and empower each other and enhance skills needed for deal-making opportunities, Alicia Bradley founded Mitten Women, a small group of female C-level executives from credit unions and financial service organizations servicing credit unions that offers the opportunity to learn to golf or sharpen skills on the course.

Inspired by Galena Girls, a similar group out of Galena, Ill. where she had previously been a guest, Carma Peters, president and CEO of Michigan Legacy Credit Union, partnered with Bradley to formally launch Mitten Women with its first annual golf outing earlier this month.

Seventeen leaders from across Michigan joined the Mitten Women gathering Aug. 5-7 at Crystal Mountain in Thompsonville. Both new and experienced golfers were welcome, and the gathering included intentional networking, executive speakers, a charity raffle, and a round of golf.

In addition to the golf and fellowship, Mitten Women also has a charitable component. Each year, a nonprofit will be selected to be the beneficiary of the funds raised from the Mitten Women’s raffle baskets. This year, Mitten Women selected Vista Maria to be its recipient, an organization based in Dearborn Heights whose mission is to foster restorative relationships and deliver innovative care, treatment, and education so that vulnerable youth and families believe in their worth, heal and build the skills for success.

Vista Maria’s CEO Megan Zambiasi joined the Mitten Women at Crystal Mountain to present to the group more about the organization’s initiatives and reach. The women ultimately raised $6,280 to donate to Vista Maria.

Corewell Health Children’s in Southeast Michigan goes GOLD for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

It typically takes more than 500 units of packed red blood cells and 100 units of platelets to support the children receiving chemotherapy each year at Corewell Health Children’s in Royal Oak. For 2024, the hospital is on track to meet or perhaps exceed those numbers.

“Blood donations are essential for our children battling cancer, as the treatments and disease itself can put patients at risk for low red blood cell and platelet counts,” says Dr. Kate Gowans , chief of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology at Corewell Health Children’s in Royal Oak. “With Michigan’s critical blood shortage in mind, we, in partnership with Versiti Blood Center of Michigan, decided to host a blood drive to honor Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.”

The public is invited to donate blood on the following dates and times at Corewell Health William Beaumont University Hospital in Royal Oak:

“One unit of blood can save up to three children’s lives,” says Lisa Muma, nurse coordinator of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month at Corewell Health in Southeast Michigan. “For those who can’t donate, please consider joining us in going gold and raising awareness. Our children fight so hard every day, and they, along with their families, deserve to be honored and recognized this month and beyond.”

National Science Foundation Grant to Boost Brain Research at Lawrence Tech

Lawrence Technological University in Southfield has received a $175,476 grant from the National Science Foundation’s Major Research Instrumentation Program to buy a new piece of research hardware.

LTU will use the grant to purchase a functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) system from NIRx Medical Technologies, a medical device company with offices in New York, Florida, and Germany.

The device measures changes in blood flow to various areas of the brain. It’s used by a wide variety of researchers in neuroscience and other sciences to study how the brain reacts when people perform cognitive tasks. It consists of a fabric cap studded with LEDs that emit near-infrared light. The device measures how much of that light bounces back to the cap, which indicates the level of blood flow, and therefore brain activity, in measured regions of the cerebral cortex.

At LTU, the fNIRS system will be used by an interdisciplinary group of researchers in everything from cognitive psychology to the engineering of brain-computer interfaces to management to marketing.

In Related News : LTU’s ongoing Salon Series Future-Proof features periodic live events that examine the business, technology, and design-focused issues poised to directly impact Michigan’s future. The second installment, “Future-Proof: Transforming Detroit from Art Deco to AI by 2050” will delve into the transformative impact of AI and Robotics on architecture and design.

“Detroit has yet to be fully embraced as a world-class destination for architecture and design,” says Christopher Stefani, chief of staff at LTU. “We’re going to explore how advancing technologies are driving economic development, attracting new talent and enhancing tourism in this region, all through the lens of Detroit as a UNESCO City of Design.”

The event will take place from 5:30-8 p.m. Sept. 17 at 1001 Woodward Ave. in Detroit. For more information and to reserve a free ticket, visit here .

Davenport University in Grand Rapids to Host Community Event Sept. 9

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 3 million deaths occur in health care every year due to unsafe conditions. A new documentary, “The Pitch,” points out that a lack of innovation might be the root of what’s preventing the healthcare industry from improving that statistic.

Davenport University is hosting an advanced screening of this groundbreaking documentary that sheds light on the future of healthcare innovation. “The Pitch” will be shown on Davenport Campuses in Grand Rapids, Warren, and Lansing at 6 p.m. Sept. 9. It’s a chance to see firsthand how even small ideas have the power to transform health care.

Joseph Brown, associate department chair in Health Information Management at Davenport University, said the documentary showcases how simple ideas can make a big impact.

“’The Pitch’ emphasizes that change doesn’t just come from big companies—it can come from students, community members or industry leaders,” Brown says. “Health care faces many challenges, and innovation is key to overcoming them. The Pitch shows that even small ideas can drive big changes in health care.”

Directed by the creator of “To Err Is Human,” the film focuses on the challenges of integrating cutting-edge innovations like immersive tech and AI learning into medicine. It follows the journey of young innovator Reetam Ganguli, who developed Elythea, a lifesaving tool that identifies pregnancy risk factors to help save the lives of both mother and baby.

Register here to attend in Grand Rapids, Warren, or Lansing.
