WOOD COUNTY, WV (WVNS) — One person was injured on Thursday night during what was confirmed as the twelfth tornado to hit West Virginia in 2024.

The Charleston, WV National Weather Service crew surveyed and then confirmed an EF1 tornado with max wind speeds up to 90 miles per hour touched down in parts of Wood County on Thursday, May 9, 2024, just after 8:15 p.m. The tornado touched down just east of Parkersburg and traveled 3.4 miles. The tornado’s path width was 250 yards, which is more than two football fields.

Other than large amounts of tree and ground damage, one person suffered minor injuries as the tornado flipped over the mobile home they were in during the storm. A barn nearby was also flipped over. The NWS survey said the tornado lifted alongside the southern part of Route 31, where a rolled-over RV could be seen.

According to the National Weather Service, EF1 tornadoes are those with wind speeds from 86 mph to 110 mph.
