MARYLAND ( DC News Now ) — Families can save on back-to-school shopping as Maryland’s Tax-Free Week returns on Sunday.

Maryland Tax-Free Week begins on Sunday, Aug.11, and runs through Saturday, Aug.17, according to an announcement from State Comptroller Brooke Lierman earlier this month.

During Tax-Free Week, Maryland will suspend its 6% sales tax on clothing and shoes under $100, regardless of the number of items purchased. The first $40 spent on backpacks will also be untaxed.

“Shop Maryland Tax-Free Week is a great time for shoppers to save money on essential items and help their budgets stretch further, especially as we continue to grapple with rising prices and consumers feel like they are paying more for less,” said Lierman.

When is Virginia’s sales tax holiday?

According to the Office of the Comptroller, sweaters, shirts, slacks, jeans, dresses, robes, underwear, belts, shoes and boots priced at $100 or less are eligible for the holiday.

Items that are not eligible include jewelry, watches, watchbands, handbags, handkerchiefs, umbrellas, scarves, ties, headbands and belt buckles.

Online items can qualify if they are paid for by the customer and delivered to them during the tax-free period. The item will not qualify if it is on back order or the retailer does not charge the customer until it ships and the shipment occurs after the week.
