Countdown to Kickoff: Bishop McNamara Mustangs

FORESTVILLE, Md (DC News Now) – The Bishop McNamara Mustangs look to build off their impressive 2023 season in head coach Greg Calhoun’s third season. He helped lead the team to six wins last season, the most since 2015 for the Mustangs.

They gained those wins all in a row to start the season until conference play, where they dropped four games in a row to close out 2023. While last year didn’t end the way the team would’ve liked, they’re ready for this season.

“To see us keep progressing and going in the right way, it’s not a lot of pressure but think we’re built for it” said senior safety and wide receiver Ben Chandler.

Chandler said that the team is a different place than they were in his freshman season, which has lead to some outside noise.

“We deal with a lot of trash talk from peers, from other schools” said Chandler. He’s motivated for this season, and his coach is too.

“We felt like we left a lot of things on the table last year, we want to go back and claim it.” Coach Calhoun said. “We were close but we gotta get over that hump.”

Calhoun feels confident in this year’s senior class and the leadership they bring, not only on offense but defense as well. With players gaining D1 attention like Chandler it’s clear the team has talent as well, but Calhoun says it’s all about the details.

“Just continue to work on the details, the smaller things..” said Calhoun. “I think we have some special things brewing”

The Mustangs play Concordia Prep on August 31st to start the season.
