FALLS CHURCH, Va. ( DC News Now ) — Thousands of families in Virginia are gearing up for the back-to-school season, and some districts are already in session. School officials are encouraging staff, students and parents to support each other for a smooth transition.

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) officials recommend parents hold a family meeting to prepare their children for the new academic year.

FCPS officials said parents should communicate clear expectations, re-establish routines, limit screen time and create a family calendar and learning space in their home.

Prince William County Public Schools (PWCS) require students to prove their required immunizations by this week to start the school year smoothly.

Staff with PWCS even held a community event to give out more than 3,000 free backpacks filled with school supplies for students.

PWCS officials are also working to prepare parents. The school system said parents should expect increased traffic and possible delays, but everyone should obey traffic guards to ensure a safe commute.

Frederick County Public Schools superintendent Dr. George Hummer kicked off the upcoming year early by greeting the students, staff and parents in a welcome video.

“I encourage you to seize every opportunity to learn, explore, and make a positive impact,” said Hummer.
