FREDERICK, Md. ( DC News Now ) — The Frederick Community College (FCC) community gathered Monday to unveil its first sculpture made on its campus.

The artist said he’s dedicating it to the future growth of everyone on campus.

A call to artists is what first drew sculptor Thomas Sterner in to create a piece that would capture the school’s motto – “Let us move forward with progress” – and show a symbol of growth by drawing inspiration from the sycamore trees on campus.

“It was an easy metaphor to use to relay information about the community, growth, sharing, learning and all those things,” Sterner explained.

A poem stands next to the sculpture, written by FCC alum Kiki Wilson, who knows all too well what it means to grow throughout the time she attended.

“I think that what it stands for is also powerful,” Wilson explained. “Growth is what education is, what the students come here to do, it’s what I came here to do.”

Both Sterner and Wilson hope that it reminds students who pass by it of the journey they are on and to always push through until the end.

“I hope they take the words and let them carry them throughout their journey wherever they are and I hope that it always reminds them of here when they think of anything else,” Wilson said.
