ROCKVILLE, Md. ( DC News Now ) — The Rockville City Police Department (RCPD ), is teaming up with the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office, to host a gun buyback event this weekend with the goal of increasing community safety.

Community members can turn in their firearms voluntarily, no questions asked, in exchange for Visa gift cards. The event will be held, rain or shine, on Saturday, Aug. 17, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at RedGate Park, located at 14500 Avery Road, Rockville.

Those turning in functioning handguns, rifles and shotguns will receive a $100 gift card. Anyone turning in functioning assault-style weapons and privately manufactured items (ghost guns) will receive a $200 gift card.

No identification is needed, but the RCPD will maintain the right to limit the number of gift cards issued per person, regardless of the number of weapons surrendered. Non-functioning guns will be accepted, but gift cards will not be exchanged for them.

Anyone participating in the event is required to remain in their vehicle at all times; walk-ups are not allowed. Firearms must also be unloaded and transported in the trunk.

“Every gun turned in is one less gun that could be used in a serious crime, suicide, or domestic violence incident or accidentally discharged by a child. Keeping guns off our community streets, out of the hands of our youth and in our schools remains the highest priority for all,” said the RCPD on the City’s website.
