DC releases annual Back to School Guide

WASHINGTON ( DC News Now ) — D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser released her annual “Back to School Guide” for students and their families in the District.

Bowser releases the guide each year to highlight key points and changes in the upcoming school year.

The guide outlined new D.C. Public Schools (DCPS) programs and practices — including new social and emotional learning (SEL) standards and financial literacy standards.

Bowser’s guide said that DCPS’ new SEL standards “aim to develop crucial skills that enable students” to develop a healthy identity, manage emotions, achieve goals, show empathy to others, maintain supportive relationships and make responsible decisions.

The guide said that the new financial literacy standards are a standalone, elective class for high school students in D.C. The class will teach students important financial knowledge.

Bowser also gave an important reminder — DCPS students are required to have up-to-date vaccines. The District offers free vaccinations at certain locations and times for children or adults who are uninsured or underinsured.
