FREDERICK, Md. ( DC News Now ) — A Frederick man said he is living a better life by inspiring others through his music. Something he said helped him through a rough life in the past.

“There’s a quote, a saying in recovery, ‘Just for Today,’ and that’s kind of how I live my life today,” music artist, Eris Brown, said.

That’s how Brown describes the way he lives his life after he felt ruled by drugs he received from doctors due to a neck injury.

“At the time when my injury happened, doctors were just giving painkillers away, so all I had to do was show up at the doctor’s office and they were filling those prescriptions,” Brown said. “So that’s kind of how my addiction started.”

He said it wasn’t until after he got incarcerated that he was able to focus on getting clean.

“It just led me to understand that I have to change my life now, and I didn’t have one more use in me or one more incarceration in me,” Brown said. “So that was the moment I had to make the change.”

Once released he entered the drug court program where he found his love for music again. He soon used his past life as inspiration to create music for those with similar backgrounds.

“This newfound voice came for people that are in recovery and I started letting guys in my sober house hear some of my songs,” Brown said. “The response that I was getting was just like, ‘How can I get this,’ so it started to make me feel empowered again.”

Brown hopes that through his music he can show other people that they can have a positive life after drugs and incarceration.

“It’s a powerful tool, and a lot of people in recovery are very creative,” Brown said. “So I was hoping that in my bringing forth this gift, that it would show people that they also have the same power.”
