HAGERSTOWN, Md. ( DC News Now ) — The city had an early sendoff to summer Thursday with a community fair in Downtown Hagerstown.

Hagerstown Housing Authority put on the event with its city partners.

It was fun for fairgoers but more importantly, the city got to engage with its residents. For fairgoer, Brandon Groomes, it was a perfect way to wind down the summer season.

“The atmosphere, the inspiration from everybody,” Groomes said. “It’s just remarkable.”

Fairgoer Diane Douglas said this wasn’t just any ordinary weekday afternoon experience.

“The free prizes, the nice people,” Douglas said. “And the weather is gorgeous today.”

Hagerstown city officials have a takeaway from the community engagement.

“We’re learning how to make neighborhoods use public space, how to make neighborhoods more fun,” said Jill Thompson, director of community and economic development. “And we get ideas from the children related to amenities like playground equipment.”
