ALEXANDRIA, Va. ( DC News Now ) — For National Check the Chip Day, the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria (AWLA) is reminding pet owners of the importance of microchipping.

“Microchips are safe and effective at quickly reuniting lost pets with their family,” AWLA said in a Facebook post.

AWLA offered some guidance for microchipping:

    • If you know where your pet’s microchip is registered, you can log in to your account to make sure your contact information is up to date.
    • If you don’t know if your pet’s microchip is registered or the number, any veterinary office or animal shelter can scan your pet and provide you with the chip number.
    • Using the microchip number, you can look up your pet to see using any microchip lookup website such as 24 Petwatch.
    • Microchips are not a GPS.

According to AWLA, microchips are not just limited to cats and dogs, even horses, rabbits and even snakes can receive one.
