ALEXANDRIA, Va. ( DC News Now ) — In response to a request from the United States Secret Service (USSS), the Judy Lowe Neighborhood Park near JD Vance’s home will be temporarily closed until further notice.

Closures started Sunday, Aug. 25. The park, which is located at 1 & 7 E. Del Ray Ave., is closed with several restrictions to the public. Officials said the park perimeter will be barricaded and monitored 24/7 by law enforcement.

“It’s sort of the gathering place in the community. And it’s the only park for the kids around here, so we already really miss it,” said neighbor Betsy Porter.

According to the city, the unit block of E. Del Ray Avenue, between Commonwealth Avenue and Clyde Avenue, will be restricted to people who live in the community.

“I think it’s kind of overkill,” said neighbor Charles Stulb.

The following conditions will be in effect during the closing period:

    • No on-street parking will be permitted on the unit block of E. Del Ray Avenue or the east side of the 2200 block of Commonwealth Ave.
    • The Commonwealth Avenue travel lanes, bike lanes and sidewalks will remain open.
    • USSS and the Alexandria Police Department will provide affected E. Del Ray Ave. residents with direct points of contact for questions.

“It’s unfortunate for our kids because my daughter, we live five streets down and she eats lunch at this park, which is out about, but you know, that they’re keeping things safe,” said neighbor Sarah Knapp.

At this time, it is unknown why the USSS requested the park to close and when it will reopen to the community.

In the meantime, officials said park-goers can use the nearby playgrounds at Simpson Park, Mount Jefferson Park, Goat Hill Park and Landover Park. A complete list of other nearby parks can be found here .
