    City of Fairfax firefighter killed in crash

    FAIRFAX, Va. ( DC News Now ) — A firefighter with the City of Fairfax Fire Department passed away after being involved in an off-duty car wreck, the department said Sunday night.

    Joe Altorell first joined the department in May of 2023 as a temp and was hired as a full-time firefighter on Christmas Day of that year.

    In addition to his position with the City of Fairfax Fire Department, he was also a volunteer in Hanover County, Va. and a member of the International Association of Firefighters (IAFF) Local 2702: City of Fairfax Professional Firefighters and Paramedics.

    In a post on Facebook, the union wrote, in part “Joe we will miss your sense of humor, your shadowboxing as you spotted backing rigs into the firehouse, and your drive as a fireman with a passion for the job. With love, rest easy Brother Joe.”
