PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY, Md. ( DC News Now ) — Airports and roadways are expected to be busy for the Labor Day weekend, according to AAA.

Joseph James and his fiancé Kirsten Soperanis stopped in Upper Marlboro, Md. Thursday evening to get gas for their RV Motor home. They were traveling from Long Island, New York to Virginia to spend time with friends at a large campground by the water for a beach party.

“We love to travel together, and I love to drive and she loves to drive and she is an excellent driver. We both love to drive motorcycles – that’s one thing we have in common, so we get on our bikes and we go,” James said.

AAA projects overall domestic travel over the Labor Day weekend to be up by 9% compared to last year, while the cost to travel will be down by 2%.

James and Soperanis told DC News Now safety is very important to them and they plan to be careful this weekend on the road.

“We definitely abide by the rules and we’ve seen a lot and we want to be safe. This is our first time going to this event so we are not sure what to expect, but we have our motorcycles so we know we are going to be doing some biking and hanging out with friends eating some crabs and enjoying the lake,” Soperanis said.

According to AAA, those traveling by car should avoid the afternoon and early evening hours of Thursday, Aug. 29 and Friday, Aug. 30, as those times will be the most congested.
