David died in the line of duty on August 28 after accidentally shooting himself near Interstate 295 on Wednesday, according to officials.

Neighbors in Northeast D.C. are mourning the loss of what they called a “community man.”

“Wayne was an awesome neighbor. He was always available and ready and willing to help,” said Lauraline Gregory, who lived next door to David for years. “He just showed nothing but care and respect and love for us, he’s community-minded. It’s not even imaginable how you go on.”

David spent 25 years as an officer and also worked on MPD’s Gun Recovery Unit before being added to the Violent Crime Suppression Unit.

Gregory said he was devoted to making the streets of D.C. safer and passionate about his community.

“You could often see him out here on his own repairing or power washing or doing something to improve the community, to better the community,” she explained.

David’s neighbors hope people remember him as a man of honor.

“He loved his work, he loved being an officer, he loved trying to make things better,” said Gregory.
