Bullis School community mourns loss of beloved football coach Ray Butler

POTOMAC, Md. ( DC News Now ) — The Bullis School community is mourning the loss of its beloved head varsity football coach, Ray Butler.

In an announcement on Sept. 3, school officials announced that Butler peacefully passed away late Monday night surrounded by his family.

Coach Butler kicked off his career at Bullis in dual roles as a security team member and an assistant football coach. Last year, he took on the role of head varsity football coach.

From the outset, it was clear that he was more than just a protector of the campus—he was a mentor and a positive force in the lives of the Bullis students he encountered throughout the day,

said Bullis School.

School officials said Butler’s capability to connect with young people, fused with his knowledge of football, quickly earned him respect and admiration within the school community. As a respected member of the Bullis School for more than a decade and while serving as the coach, he helped shape the lives of players with his “calm demeanor, compassion, and unwavering dedication.”

“He committed himself fully to them—in-season or out, rain or shine, win or lose,” said the school in a release.

School officials said Butler’s passing has left a significant void, particularly among the students and athletes who were inspired by his guidance and care.

“As the Bullis family mourns this loss, the community is encouraged to come together to remember Coach Butler and support one another in the days ahead,” said the school.

The Bullis School’s counseling team is available to support students. Information regarding Butler’s funeral will be shared with the community once they are available.
