PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, Va. ( DC News Now ) — The Prince William County Police Department (PWCPD) said a 17-year-old boy has been charged after trying to strike an officer in Woodbridge earlier last month.

On Aug. 22, PWCPD said officers concluded an investigation of an assault that took place on Aug. 6 shortly after 1 a.m., in the 1300 block of Horner Road.

The investigation revealed that 17-year-old boy was seen stealing items from a car and the owner of the car saw him in the act, according to police. Officers detained the boy and released him to his guardians.

Later that morning, the boy was seen in the same area, unsupervised, and brought back to his guardians, where he attempted to strike an officer in the face, according to the department.

    No injuries were reported.

The PWCPD said that after consultation with Juvenile Court Services, the alleged assault resulted in a “formal action” that will be handled through the courts.

Following the investigation, authorities charged the 17-year-old boy of Woodbridge with assault and battery on a law enforcement officer, petit larceny, vehicle trespass, public intoxication and additional charges.

    His court date is pending.
