Family of man fatally shot by DC police requests release of body-worn camera footage

WASHINGTON ( DC News Now ) — Family and friends of a man killed by police earlier this month are now asking D.C. officials to release the body-worn camera footage of the incident, according to their lawyer.

Two Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) officers shot and killed 26-year-old Justin Robinson outside of a McDonald’s on Marion Barry Avenue SE on Sunday, Sept. 1.

According to the Office of the Attorney General, Robinson worked as a violence interrupter for the Cure the Streets Program .

Under District law, police have up to five days to release body camera footage after an officer gets involved in a shooting.

Days after the shooting, however, city officials said Robinson’s family did not want the body-worn camera footage of the incident released . At a vigil, members of his family cited concerns that parts of the video would be redacted, and they want the community to see every bit of footage.

On Monday, a lawyer representing Robinson’s family said they had changed their minds and wanted the video released. In a statement sent to DC News Now, Brandon Burrell, their lawyer, wrote:

We can confirm that the family is now requesting that the body camera video be released and the Mayor’s office has confirmed it will be publicly releasing the video. We have decided not to make any substantive statement concerning the incident until the video has been released.
